Why Use Safety Barriers?

Why Use Safety Barriers

Accidents without safety barriers
63% of road deaths and serious injuries happen on single carriage roads, where usually there are no barriers to protect against a run-off crash against static objects such as trees. To test the likely impact of a crash against a tree, the TV show 'Fifth Gear' performed a controlled head-on collision of a 5 star EuroNCAP rated car against a tree at a speed of 90km per hour. The results show that, even when driving a vehicle which conforms to the highest standards, the severity of such an accident, in the absence of a guardrail can be very high.

Safety Improvements from Upgrading safety barriers
On 22nd of June 2007, a Heavy Goods Vehicle carrying a load of potatoes ran-off the side of the Envisal bridge in the Belgian town of Verviers. The barrier in place, called Caison Mailleux, which was not tested in accordance to the EN 1317, failed to absorb the energy of the impact and collapsed. As a result the Heavy Goods Vehicle plunged over the bridge and fell 10 metres down until it landed on the Belgian motorway. Tragically, the driver of the Heavy Goods Vehicle was killed.

Following the accident, the road authorities in Verviers decided to replace the collapsed structure with a H4b barrier, which is tested according to the EN 1317 and is designed to withhold an impact of a 38 tonne HGV travelling at 65km/hr.

A year later on the 3rd of July 2008, a similar run-off accident occurred when a driver lost control of his trailer truck at this same location. Fortunately, this time around, the H4b barrier which had been installed managed to contain the vehicle. As a result there were no fatalities recorded.
